A New Mahjong Card, a Fresh Start

A new mahjong card can make an experienced player pause at a familiar-looking hand. That is part of the interest: the tiles remain, but the possibilities change.

For groups following National Mah Jongg League rules, the winning-hands card changes annually. When your group moves to a new edition, start by making sure everyone is using the same one.

Read before you race

Give yourself a few quiet minutes with the card before playing. Look over its sections, printed instructions, and explanations. Resist the temptation to decide that something familiar must work exactly as it did before.

You are not trying to memorize the whole card. You are getting to know where to look.

For play using the 2026 NMJL edition, use the League's 2026 card rather than a previous year's card or an unrelated online chart.

Build one hand where you can see it

Choose a hand from your own card and lay it out face up with your tiles. This is a practice exercise, not a competitive round.

Check the required numbers, suits, group sizes, and any conditions attached to that line. Then take the tiles apart and build a different hand.

For an even smaller exercise, cover one group with a piece of paper and explain to a friend what belongs there. Check your answer together.

Make the first game a learning game

Agree that pauses and questions are welcome. Keep the card within easy reach, use enough light to read comfortably, and leave space between drinks and the playing area.

A card holder can be useful when it improves the viewing angle without blocking anyone's tiles. It is an aid, not a substitute for reading the card itself.

The goal is not to be the quickest person at the table. It is to leave knowing a little more than when you arrived.

That is a satisfying kind of fresh start: familiar friends, familiar tiles, and something new to notice.
